The creator of a project aiming to bring Grand Theft Auto 5 to the Nintendo Switch has announced the shutdown of their work following a cease and desist notice from intellectual property holder Take-Two Interactive. The developer, operating as Paralympics Productions, stated the project will officially close on October 3.
In a statement shared on social media and reported by GamesRadar, the developer expressed gratitude for the support received and apologized for not being able to deliver the GTA 5 port. They specifically thanked Take-Two for what they termed "mercy," suggesting the situation could have been more severe. The developer confirmed receiving a formal cease and desist notice and stated their intention to comply, citing the unlikelihood of successfully contesting Take-Two in court due to the company's strong legal position and the developer's acknowledged "intent for 'mayhem.'"
The decision to shut down the project and refrain from releasing any code was made to prevent escalation into a formal lawsuit. The developer clarified that no legal action has yet occurred and that they will not release the project's code for others to potentially continue, as this would likely trigger further legal proceedings.
This development follows Rockstar Games' recent "Mod Guidelines" notice, which reminds users to respect their games and prohibits modifications intended to operate on unsupported platforms, including consoles. Grand Theft Auto 5 was never officially released on any Nintendo platform. While GTA 6 is not anticipated for the Switch or the upcoming Switch 2, there have been previous reports indicating Rockstar explored the possibility of bringing the next installment to the successor console.
