GTA 6 Adds Friction to Familiar Open-World Feature

Grand Theft Auto 6 is incorporating a common open-world feature – the ability to summon your vehicle on demand – but with a signature Rockstar Games twist that introduces real-world complexities. As detailed in GameSpot's coverage, players will use a smartphone app called Scooter Bros. to call their car.

Instead of instantly materializing, the car will be delivered by a company employee who arrives on a scooter, which they then stash in the trunk before departing. This service comes with a fee, adding an economic consideration for players. The process requires players to plan ahead, as it may not be feasible to summon a vehicle during urgent situations like a robbery. This contrasts with the instant availability often found in other open-world titles.

While players can still steal cars directly from the street, this action introduces its own set of challenges. These include potential confrontations with drivers who may resist, the possibility of the stolen vehicle being equipped with a tracker, or finding it with a low fuel level.

Rockstar Games has indicated that fuel management will not be an overly burdensome aspect of gameplay, with cars designed to run for extended periods before needing refueling. However, the inclusion of these systems suggests a focus on immersion, presenting players with multiple interconnected mechanics to manage during their criminal endeavors. Grand Theft Auto 6 is slated for release on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
