Rockstar Games' upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6 and Nintendo's Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, two of the most anticipated titles of 2026, share an unexpected connection: the presence of large sea mammals. While the nature and depiction of these creatures differ significantly between the two games, their inclusion marks a notable, if coincidental, trend.
In Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, players encounter aggressive, carnivorous seals with bulbous noses, referred to as sea beasts. These creatures play a role in the early narrative, with one such beast even consuming the father of a main character, Esmeralda. This grim depiction contrasts sharply with the more benign aquatic life often found in video games.
Meanwhile, Grand Theft Auto 6 has revealed promotional material that includes a "Chunkee the Manatee Shot Glass," featuring a character from an in-universe animated show, "Macca the Gator." Additionally, other merchandise displays turquoise jerseys with "Manatees" branding, a clear nod to the Miami Dolphins and the game's Vice City setting. This presents a more lighthearted and consumer-focused integration of sea mammals into the game's world.
The Manatee Link
This shared focus on manatee-like creatures, one menacing and the other seemingly more commercial, is purely coincidental. Outside of Pokémon's Seel, large marine mammals are relatively uncommon as prominent figures in video games. Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave and Grand Theft Auto 6's merchandise both highlight these less-frequently featured animals, sparking interest in their potential for more diverse game design elements.
Further adding to the theme, Frontier Developments announced that the West Indian Manatee will be featured in the upcoming simulation game Planet Zoo 2, scheduled for release on October 13. This growing presence of seals, otters, manatees, and dugongs in upcoming titles suggests a potential resurgence of these creatures in interactive entertainment.
