Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to feature a staggering increase in animation data compared to its predecessor, Grand Theft Auto 5. Rockstar North co-head Aaron Garbut revealed in an interview with The New York Times that the studio established a dedicated team to meticulously craft the non-player characters (NPCs) within the game. This focused effort has resulted in GTA 6 possessing over 600,000 unique animations, a figure more than ten times the 55,000 found in GTA 5.

Garbut elaborated on the depth of detail applied to each NPC, stating that the team "art-directed each individual one of them." This meticulous approach extends to the game's environments, where every room's elements have been considered. "Every room in the game, somebody thought about this … Who's sitting where, what they're drinking, the marks that are left on the table. The pictures on the wall will have the people that are in that room, with their tattoos on their arms and their family behind them," he explained. This level of environmental storytelling and character specific detail contributes to the overall immersion and scale of the game world.

The animation count for GTA 6 also significantly surpasses that of Red Dead Redemption 2, which had roughly 300,000 animations. When considering that GTA 6's game map is reportedly three times larger than Red Dead Redemption 2's, the sheer scale and ambition of the project become increasingly apparent. This focus on immense detail and expansive world-building aligns with Rockstar's established development philosophy, emphasizing the substantial effort and resources poured into creating highly detailed and immersive open worlds that push the limits of contemporary hardware.
