Brgames Interactive, a development studio based in Turkey, has announced that its open-world game, Phantom Vice Auto, will launch in early access on Steam on November 19. This release date places it on the same day as Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto 6. Rockstar is releasing Grand Theft Auto 6 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X on that date, with a PC version to follow later.
Phantom Vice Auto, developed by a team reportedly numbering three individuals, aims to capture the free-roam, driving, and shooting mechanics reminiscent of the Grand Theft Auto series. The game's trailer, which is over a year old, showcases driving with at least four car types, combat with five different weapons, pedestrian NPCs, and parkour animations. The developers have indicated that the game will feature three playable protagonists, similar to Grand Theft Auto 5, including a street-smart hustler, a disgraced former agent, and a mercenary. Additionally, a standalone "Phantom Vice Online" mode is planned to support up to 32 players.
While the game's Steam store page describes it as an upgrade for a new generation, suggesting a remaster of a past release, its development reportedly began in 2024. The studio's website indicates the game is an early access project. The game's logo also bears a notable resemblance to that of the Grand Theft Auto series.
Despite the potential for it to be seen as a cynical or even foolish move to launch a game against one of the most anticipated entertainment releases of all time, Brgames Interactive's decision stands in contrast to many other developers and publishers who are strategically avoiding releasing titles in the six weeks surrounding Grand Theft Auto 6's launch. The developer's chutzpah in challenging such a monumental release with what appears to be an unfinished product has been noted.
