Grand Theft Auto VI will feature a relationship system that tracks the bond between protagonists Lucia and Jason, Rockstar Games co-head Rob Nelson revealed in an interview. This system is separate from the criminal tracking mechanic, and players can influence it by spending time together in various activities, both mundane and criminal.

Nelson explained that nurturing the relationship involves activities such as exploring the open world together, playing mini-golf or pool, kayaking, or engaging in criminal acts like robbing stores and banks. These shared experiences are intended to positively impact the relationship. Players can also initiate meetups or respond to in-game texts from the other protagonist, while ignoring such communications could negatively affect their bond.

The narrative of GTA 6 is structured such that Lucia and Jason will largely remain partners in crime throughout the story, regardless of the player's active efforts to strengthen their relationship. However, Nelson indicated that the depth of their connection might influence how certain story elements unfold. Players can, to some extent, opt out of actively managing the relationship if they prefer not to engage with that aspect of the game.

While the primary narrative will keep the protagonists working together, the degree to which players invest in their relationship may lead to different story outcomes. The developers are exploring the extent to which players will engage with this mechanic, aiming not to force it upon them. Players might also find opportunities to strengthen their bond through activities like shopping, exercising, or getting haircuts together.
