GTA 6 Disc Version Rumored for December Launch, Rockstar May Be Confirming

Initial reports indicating that Grand Theft Auto VI would launch without a physical disc in the box may not tell the full story, as rumors now suggest a disc-based version could be released for consoles as early as December. This information originates from a leaker who previously and accurately reported that the game would initially ship with only a digital code. The leaker, known by the online handle Graczdari and cited by Polish site PPE, claims that the disc-less packaging will be a limited first run. A physical copy is expected to become available a few weeks later, coinciding with the holiday season.

Further lending credence to this rumor is a screenshot of an email shared by PPE, purportedly from Rockstar Support. The email reportedly states that "you will be able to acquire a physical copy during the following months." While the authenticity of this email cannot be independently verified, the combination of the leaker's track record and this apparent confirmation offers a reason for optimism among players who prefer physical media.

Rockstar Games is known for its stringent security measures surrounding its titles, particularly given the immense hype surrounding Grand Theft Auto. The necessity of producing and distributing physical copies well in advance of a release date makes them vulnerable to leaks. A strategy of shipping empty boxes with digital codes that can only be activated on launch day helps mitigate this risk, preventing early access through disc leaks. However, this approach leaves players reliant on the digital storefront's longevity, server stability, and their own internet connections for continued access to the game.

If the current rumors prove accurate, a physical version would offer a more permanent form of ownership, though it remains unclear how much of the game, if any, would still require a digital download to play. This would still present a challenge for players eager to secure a copy on day one. Questions regarding how customers can obtain a disc without purchasing the game again have been posed to Rockstar, with updates expected should the company provide a response.
