A recent alleged leak from Grand Theft Auto VI has ignited discussions surrounding the future of game ownership, particularly concerning digital-only releases. The leak, which appears to show one of the game's protagonists, Jason, browsing a video game store, has drawn attention due to its ironic depiction of physical media in an era where digital purchases are increasingly dominant.

The clip reportedly features Jason visiting a store named Game Horde, where he is seen using binoculars to examine shelves stocked with various games and consoles. A watermark on the video states, "This is not about actual discs. It's about ownership. Resale rights still matter, even in a digital-only era." While Grand Theft Auto VI will be available at physical retailers, its "physical" edition is expected to contain only a code for the game rather than a disc.

This situation reflects a broader trend where a growing percentage of game sales are digital. However, many players still express a preference for physical game discs and voice concerns about game preservation in an increasingly digital-only landscape. Following the initial GTA 6 leaks, the individual claiming responsibility outlined several "commandments," including directives against digital preorders, fake single-player downloadable content, and the preservation of single-player content.

Grand Theft Auto VI is slated for release on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Despite extensive gameplay leaks, a former Rockstar director has suggested that these leaks are inconsequential and that the public should remain calm. Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive have not yet identified those responsible for the leaks, though the leaker appears to have had access to the game's data. This incident follows a major leak of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay footage in 2022, for which an 18-year-old suspect was apprehended and committed to a secure hospital. Reports indicate that the individual, Arion Kurtaj, has since left the hospital and is now in a "normal prison" awaiting a new trial.

As the release date approaches, Rockstar is set to unveil official footage of the game on Netflix on August 27.
