A user known as 'Cyberleek', who had previously leaked footage from Grand Theft Auto 6, attempted a high-stakes gamble by tying unlockable gameplay clips of the protagonist Lucia, including nude sequences, to investment milestones in a new cryptocurrency. This strategy, aimed at raising a reported $30 million for an alleged development build of the game, has backfired significantly as the cryptocurrency's market value has crashed.
The Cryptocurrency Gambit
Cyberleek's plan involved progressively revealing more revealing gameplay based on the cryptocurrency's market capitalization. Initial milestones included Lucia in a bikini for a few million dollars, followed by topless gameplay for slightly more. The most controversial tier, requiring $4 million, promised fully nude gameplay, with a further promise of 4K resolution nude footage for $6 million. These tiers were reportedly met within hours, leading to widespread sharing of the footage on social media by eager players.
Market Collapse and Investor Exodus
Despite the initial success in attracting investment for the explicit content, the Cyberleek cryptocurrency experienced a dramatic downturn. Prior to the leak-related surge, the coin had a market cap of under $1.7 million. At its peak, it reached $8.2 million, but has since seen a significant drop of 71%. While Cyberleek could have profited from transaction fees, the notes suggest that the bulk of the money leaving the market cap came from external investors, indicating a loss of confidence.
Shifting Milestones and Diminishing Returns
In an attempt to revive interest, Cyberleek introduced new milestones, including sequences involving tanks, private lap dances, and a beach massacre, all still culminating in the promise of a development build at the $30 million mark. However, with the cryptocurrency's value in sharp decline and the controversy surrounding the earlier revelations, fans appear hesitant to invest further. Comments on social media suggest that the leaker may have "overplayed their hand" by releasing the most shocking content too early in the investment scheme.
Rockstar's Control Over the Narrative
Some observers noted that Cyberleek's strategy may have been flawed by offering the most sensitive material at lower investment tiers. Rockstar Games has already revealed significant gameplay elements, including police shootouts and details related to strip clubs and lap dances, diminishing the exclusivity of such content. The leaker's gamble to monetize explicit material may have inadvertently highlighted that other, less sexualized, gameplay elements could still be revealed by Rockstar closer to the game's official release.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for release on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
