Rockstar Games has offered new details regarding the sheer scale of the Grand Theft Auto 6 map, revealing that its total landmass is comparable to the combined playable areas of Grand Theft Auto 4, Grand Theft Auto 5, and Red Dead Redemption 2. According to co-studio head Aaron Garbut in an interview with Edge magazine, the GTA 6 map is approximately twice the size of GTA 5's and three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's.
Beyond its vast geographical extent, Rockstar emphasizes the density and detail within the game world. Garbut stated that GTA 6 features an "order of magnitude more interiors" than any previous title from the studio, ensuring that "every back alley is as densely detailed and interesting as the others." He noted that players will be able to explore a multitude of locations, many of which he himself has not yet personally visited despite years of development.
Garbut also addressed the immense pressure to meet fan expectations after a 13-year wait. He explained that the team has strived to avoid compromises on the game's scale, detail, interactivity, story, and open world, likening the development effort to building "a pyramid on Everest."
Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The immense scope of the game, particularly its map size, is consistent with its substantial file size. Speculation also suggests that Grand Theft Auto 6 Online could potentially launch in 2027.
