Rockstar Games has orchestrated a striking marketing stunt for Grand Theft Auto VI, transforming Miami's Kaseya Center into a real-world homage to the game's Vice City setting. The iconic Kaseya Center, home to the NBA's Miami Heat, now prominently displays "Welcome to Vice City" and the Roman numerals "VI" on its exterior.
This elaborate display directly references the Sahara Arena, a fictionalized version of the Kaseya Center that appears in the game. The real-world signage mirrors the location and architectural features, including a nearby Ferris wheel, as seen in recent GTA 6 screenshots released by Game Informer and analyzed by IGN. The stunt reportedly cost Rockstar Games close to $1 million, reflecting the scale of the campaign.
Months of negotiations with Miami-Dade County officials preceded this public display. Initial proposals for the GTA 6 marketing campaign considered a wider transformation of Miami, including the airport, beaches, and drone shows. However, these plans faced scrutiny from some local officials. Miami Beach Commissioner David Suarez voiced concerns, citing that the game might not align with local values, showing footage from the game during discussions.
Conversely, Commissioner Monica Matteo-Salinas advocated for the campaign, framing it as a positive development for the gaming community. Ultimately, local commissioners approved the marketing negotiations with a 4-3 vote.
The Kaseya Center's prominent placement of the GTA 6 promotion underscores the game's deep connection to its Miami-inspired setting. Grand Theft Auto VI is slated for release on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. IGN's coverage also includes an interview with Rockstar Games, a detailed preview of the game, and confirmation of its first major voice actor.
