While Rockstar Games has characterized Grand Theft Auto VI as a "single-player experience" at launch, its predecessor's immense success with GTA Online suggests a multiplayer component is inevitable. According to Twitch CEO Dan Clancy, this online portion could potentially debut in 2027.
Clancy shared this timeline in an interview with Bloomberg, as reported by IGN. He stated that Twitch has "spent a lot of time talking with Rockstar about their plans," adding that his platform anticipates a significant boost in viewership when GTA 6's multiplayer launches. Clancy theorized that the increase in streamer and viewer activity in 2027, driven by the multiplayer release, could be "even bigger" than the initial launch impact.
Rockstar has not officially announced any details regarding multiplayer for GTA 6. However, Clancy's comments, stemming from his team's engagement with Rockstar, suggest more than mere speculation. This proposed timeline implies a longer gap between the single-player game's release and its online counterpart than seen with GTA V. The original Grand Theft Auto V launched on September 17, 2013, with GTA Online following a few weeks later.
GTA Online has proven to be a remarkably successful venture for Rockstar, generating substantial revenue through microtransactions over the years and fostering a dedicated player base. The enduring popularity of GTA V's online mode may present a challenge for Rockstar in encouraging players to transition to a new iteration.
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to release on November 19 for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A PC version is expected at a later date.
