The recent Grand Theft Auto 6 showcase revealed significant details about the highly anticipated title, including its expansive map, roughly three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's, and the optional nature of the relationship between protagonists Jason and Lucia. However, one key aspect remains unconfirmed: the online component.

Rockstar Games has not officially announced plans for a GTA 6 online experience, even emphasizing that GTA 6 is a "single-player experience" during its preorder phase. This silence has fueled speculation, particularly given the sustained success and profitability of the current Grand Theft Auto Online. Financial data indicates that GTA Online continued to generate an average of $1.3 million per day between September 2025 and April 2026, suggesting that Rockstar has a strong incentive to maintain this revenue stream.

Several possibilities exist for how GTA 6 might interact with its online counterpart. One scenario involves Rockstar launching an entirely new GTA Online experience within the world of GTA 6. This would be an ambitious undertaking, potentially aligning with rumors of a multi-billion dollar budget for the game and the development efforts of the former Red Dead Online team. Such an approach could position Rockstar to compete with live-service giants like Fortnite and Minecraft, but reinventing both a single-player blockbuster and a live-service game simultaneously presents a considerable challenge.

Another possibility is the integration of GTA 6 content into the existing GTA Online. The current iteration boasts a substantial player base and continues to be a reliable income source, consistently drawing mid-to-high five figures of concurrent players on Steam. Rockstar may be hesitant to alienate this audience by forcing them onto new hardware or a completely new game, especially as hardware costs continue to rise. While GTA 6 is expected to utilize an advanced engine and launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, a PC release and support for previous-generation consoles remain unconfirmed. Maintaining the current GTA Online would allow players on older platforms, including PS4, Xbox One, and potentially PC, to access GTA 6-related content. This content could be monetized through microtransactions or a standalone purchase, similar to the current GTA Online model. Integrating content from GTA 6 into the existing online framework could expand its reach and capitalize on the cultural moment, though Rockstar must carefully balance this with the risk of cannibalizing sales of the new base game or being perceived as a lazy cash grab if content is too derivative or purely cosmetic.

The third possibility is that GTA Online will continue as a standalone spin-off of GTA 5 with no crossover whatsoever with GTA 6. While this might seem less likely given the financial success of GTA Online, the lack of any official announcements or hints regarding a GTA 6 online component in previews from major outlets like IGN and The New York Times suggests this could be the case. Rockstar's singular focus on the single-player experience for GTA 6 may mean that the lucrative GTA Online player base will not be integrated into the new title in the near future. This approach would allow Rockstar to concentrate entirely on the single-player campaign, leaving the existing GTA Online to operate independently.
