GTA 6 PC Release Potentially Set for Early 2028, Following Console Launch

Grand Theft Auto 6 is slated for a November 19, 2026, release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. However, PC players will likely face a longer wait, with an estimated release window in the first quarter of 2028. This projection places the PC version approximately 15 to 18 months after its console counterparts.

This estimate is derived from Rockstar's established practice of launching PC versions of its major titles after their console debuts. For instance, Grand Theft Auto V took about 19 months to arrive on PC after its initial September 2013 console release. Red Dead Redemption 2 had a slightly shorter gap, with its PC version launching 13 months after the console release.

Further supporting the possibility of a delayed PC launch, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy alluded to GTA 6 Online potentially arriving sometime in 2027, suggesting a focus on refining the multiplayer experience before the PC release. While Rockstar has not officially announced a PC version, and the game is currently only listed for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, the company's history and statements from Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick make a PC release highly probable.

Zelnick has previously explained that Rockstar's traditional approach prioritizes console players first, a strategy he attributes to historical development practices rather than specific marketing agreements. He also highlighted the growing importance of the PC market, noting that it can now represent 45-50% of sales for major titles, a significant increase from years past. This indicates a substantial potential audience for a PC version of GTA 6.

The console-first development strategy also allows Rockstar to leverage the power of more advanced PC hardware. Former Rockstar producer John Ricchio explained that starting development on console hardware provides more flexibility to optimize for PC later, making it easier to scale up for more powerful systems than to scale down for consoles. This approach could lead to enhanced graphical features for the PC version of GTA 6, potentially including higher resolutions, advanced graphics settings, ultrawide support, and higher frame rates, alongside the inevitable modding community.

Contrary to earlier speculation, GTA 6 will not be streamable to PC via Xbox Cloud Gaming. Xbox confirmed that the game will not be exclusively streamed or made available to PC through their cloud service.
