GTA 6 Preorder Sales Significantly Outpacing Previous Blockbusters

Grand Theft Auto 6 is demonstrating unprecedented preorder momentum, according to an analysis by Sensor Tower. The upcoming title has generated preorder sales pacing 148% ahead of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2022) over a comparable period, making it the strongest performer among major games released over the past six years.

Sensor Tower’s data, which focuses on digital preorders in the United States, shows that GTA 6 has already sold over 6.45 million copies and generated more than $630 million in revenue. The firm anticipates that the majority of preorders will occur in the final week before launch, with total prepurchases potentially reaching 25 million units, which could translate to over $2 billion in revenue before the game is even released.

The current distribution of preorders indicates a strong preference for the PlayStation 5, with 74% of sales on Sony's console compared to 26% on Xbox Series X|S. This aligns with the broader sales performance of the consoles. Despite this split, Xbox has expressed satisfaction with the preorder numbers for GTA 6.

While GTA 6 is a single-player focused experience, Rockstar Games is expected to eventually launch a new iteration of GTA Online, which is projected to be a significant revenue generator. Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A PC version is anticipated to follow, possibly in early 2027.
