Grand Theft Auto 6 has officially been rated M for Mature by the ESRB, confirming that the game will feature explicit sexual content. This rating, along with specific warning labels on digital storefronts in various regions, provides insight into the game's adult themes, distinguishing it from its predecessor, Grand Theft Auto 5.
The M rating, standard for the Grand Theft Auto series which focuses on criminal activities, is accompanied by warnings for blood and gore, intense violence, mature humor, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, and use of drugs and alcohol. These labels are largely consistent with those for GTA 5.
However, a notable difference has emerged in the classifications for Australia and New Zealand. While both Grand Theft Auto 5 and Grand Theft Auto 6 carry an R18+ rating in these regions, the specific content warnings differ. GTA 5's warning mentions "sexual material," whereas GTA 6's includes "sex scenes." This distinction suggests a potential increase in the explicitness or nature of sexual content within the new title.
This difference in classification has led to speculation that GTA 6's sex scenes might be more akin to those found in Cyberpunk 2077. In Cyberpunk 2077, sex scenes are often integrated as meaningful narrative elements that develop character relationships, frequently presented from a first-person perspective. In contrast, GTA 5's sexual encounters are generally more comedic and less intimate. The updated rating for GTA 6 could imply that players will experience more personal and story-driven intimate scenarios, potentially including first-person perspectives, rather than solely comical interludes.
While elements such as the previously leaked nudist town suggest that humorous and potentially lewd scenes will still be present, the new rating indicates that players might also engage with more intimate and relationship-focused sexual content, particularly concerning the protagonists Lucia and Jason. Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for release on November 19.
