Rockstar Games is significantly overhauling the long-standing Wanted system in Grand Theft Auto 6, introducing a more detailed approach to police awareness and a new Criminal Profile mechanic. These changes aim to deepen the game's simulation of player actions and their consequences within the world.
The Wanted system will revert to the classic six-star rating, a feature hinted at in previous leaks. However, police awareness will now extend beyond immediate sight. Suspect descriptions will incorporate details such as the player character's clothing, the vehicle they are using, and whether they were accompanied by another character during a crime. For the police to become aware of a crime, it must either be witnessed directly or reported, such as through a triggered alarm.
To evade law enforcement, players will have new options to counter their description. This includes changing vehicles, entering crowded areas on foot, altering their attire, or splitting up from a partner if the crime involved two individuals. These methods allow for more strategic escapes based on the evolving police intelligence.
Alongside the revamped Wanted system, GTA 6 will feature a new Criminal Profile. This system is described as a more nuanced evolution of Red Dead Redemption 2's Honor system, reflecting the player's overall behavior throughout the game. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson explained that minor infractions and evasive actions without escalating to violence will generally have less impact on the profile. Consistent actions that go beyond what is necessary or involve gratuitous escalation, however, will steer the Criminal Profile in a particular direction.
