As Grand Theft Auto VI approaches its November release, previews have highlighted the intimate relationship between protagonists Jason and Lucia. The game's launch trailer showcased romantic scenes, and previews indicate players can engage in physical affection like kissing and holding hands, as well as participate in activities such as beach dates and shopping. Rockstar Games has stated that the pair's bond can evolve based on in-game communication, suggesting a dynamic that centers on their relationship.
This focus on a developing romantic storyline within GTA 6 has prompted discussion regarding infidelity. A recent poll conducted by British firm YouGov surveyed 4,000 adults, revealing that 6% consider dating within a video game to be cheating. An additional 19% stated they would not be comfortable with it, even if they did not classify it as cheating.
The poll results, particularly when framed by news outlets asking "can you cheat on someone with a video game character?", have drawn criticism from some players. Social media reactions often point to existing games like The Sims, where players have long engaged in simulated relationships, questioning the distinction being made now. Concerns about GTA 6's relationship mechanics have surfaced previously, with some social media users expressing that such in-depth virtual relationships could be grounds for real-life breakups.
Rockstar Games has emphasized that players are not obligated to pursue the romantic aspect of Jason and Lucia's relationship. While the characters begin with a desire for connection, player engagement will determine the depth of their bond. Even without active pursuit of romance, the protagonists will maintain a strong partnership. Rockstar North's co-studio head, Rob Nelson, described the experience of managing their relationship as feeling like a "steward" and fostering protectiveness over them as a unit, regardless of gameplay context.
Rockstar has been actively promoting GTA 6, recently featuring real-world vehicles modified to resemble those from the game driving through Miami.
