Grand Theft Auto VI will allow players to control both members of its central criminal duo, Jason and Lucia, and introduce a new relationship mechanic dubbed the "Bond system." This system allows players to foster the connection between the two protagonists, with the depth of their relationship potentially influencing their shared narrative.

Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, explained in an IGN preview that the bond system's impact is not yet fully defined, but "whether you've nurtured the relationship or not will definitely have a bearing on how their story plays out." While Jason and Lucia will always cooperate as criminal partners, their romantic closeness, or lack thereof, is something players can actively shape. Nelson indicated that simply progressing through the main story and completing missions together may not be sufficient to maintain a strong romantic bond, suggesting that dedicated effort will be required to keep them romantically intertwined.

Nelson encourages players to engage with the Bond system, stating that it "will hopefully reinforce your connection to them and increase your investment in their story." The core of increasing their bond appears to revolve around spending time together outside of the main narrative objectives.

Activities that can strengthen Jason and Lucia's relationship include exploring the open world side-by-side, participating in shared side activities like playing pool, golf, or kayaking, and even engaging in joint criminal endeavors such as robbing banks or gas stations. While the full extent of the bond system's influence on the game remains to be seen, Rockstar aims to deepen player connection to the characters and their journey.
