GTA 6's Detail Demands Slower Pace, Rockstar Says

Rockstar Games is intentionally slowing down the pace of life in Grand Theft Auto 6 to match its increased visual fidelity and realism. The studio found that the higher resolution and detail of the new Vice City necessitated a more deliberate approach to gameplay and world simulation compared to Grand Theft Auto 5.

In an interview with EDGE magazine, Rob Nelson, co-head of Rockstar North and head of development, explained that the team visited Miami extensively to capture the essence of the city. Upon rebuilding Vice City with these real-world observations, initial tests using the same time and gameplay speed systems as GTA 5 felt "too fast." Nelson elaborated that as world resolution increases, certain behaviors that might have been acceptable in older titles become jarring.

For instance, NPCs in GTA 5 would not react unless a weapon was aimed directly at them. In the more detailed world of GTA 6, such a lack of reaction from pedestrians would break the illusion of realism. To address this, Rockstar has implemented a slower day-night cycle, allowing sunsets and nighttime to linger, creating a more extended sense of immersion. NPCs will also exhibit more believable reactions to player actions.

Summoning vehicles is no longer instantaneous. Players can use an in-game app called Scooter Bros, which involves a short wait as a scooter courier arrives with the requested vehicle. Furthermore, while players can store an arsenal in their car trunks, they cannot carry all weapons on their person simultaneously.

The game also introduces narrative pacing elements to prevent players from rushing through the story too quickly. This includes enforced downtime, such as requiring players to accumulate cash for certain jobs, which naturally slows progression and encourages players to engage with the world at a less breakneck speed. Rockstar's aim is to prioritize realism over the more arcade-like design choices present in some aspects of previous titles, ensuring that the game's pacing aligns with its advanced visual presentation.
