GTA 6's morality system will let players define their criminal persona

Grand Theft Auto 6 will feature an advanced morality system, dubbed the 'Criminal Profile,' which will allow players to shape how the game world perceives their characters, Lucia and Jason. This system, inspired by Red Dead Redemption 2's honor mechanics, will track player actions and represent them on a scale ranging from 'Professional' to 'Irredeemable,' indicated by angel and devil icons.

According to Rob Nelson, co-studio head and head of development at Rockstar North, the Criminal Profile provides players with agency over their character's behavior and its consequences. The intention is not to force players into specific playstyles but to ensure that their consistent actions have a tangible impact on the narrative and how NPCs react to them. For instance, not every confrontation needs to end in a fatality; a 'professional' criminal might choose to incapacitate an opponent, extract information non-violently, or resort to intimidation or bribery.

Nelson explained that this responsive system was implemented to prevent player characters from becoming overly powerful. The game will acknowledge even minor acts of good, such as picking up litter or feeding birds, which can contribute to a player's redemption arc. This nuanced approach suggests that players can influence their character's journey and the story's progression by making conscious decisions, whether they lean towards extreme violence or a more measured approach to their criminal endeavors.
