GTA 6's Vast Scope Means No Single Developer Knows It All, Echoing Red Dead 2's Famous Detail

The famously dynamic horse testicles in Red Dead Redemption 2, which react to ambient temperature, were an emergent detail rather than a planned feature. According to Rockstar's head of development Aaron Garbut, as reported by journalist Jason Schreier, this level of granular detail often arises from individual developers' initiative rather than direct mandates.

Schreier learned this during a visit to Rockstar North while researching a report on Grand Theft Auto 6. Garbut explained that the horse testicles were not part of a checklist of features but rather the result of a developer or a small team autonomously deciding to implement a novel detail. This anecdote serves as a relevant parallel to the development of Grand Theft Auto 6.

Garbut also stated that the sheer scale and complexity of GTA 6 mean no single individual possesses complete knowledge of every element within the game. This vastness, combined with developers having the freedom to incorporate interesting ideas, suggests that GTA 6 could feature similarly unexpected and detailed elements. The game's development has been extensive, with some artists working on it for 11 years and the art production team growing significantly compared to GTA 5.

Further insights from Schreier's report indicate that GTA 6 will feature narrower roads than its predecessor to enhance the feeling of traffic and realism. The game's interaction system, which replaced GTA's radial menu in Red Dead Redemption 2, also stemmed from a developer's independent work, though the team ultimately reverted to the radial menu for GTA 6 after exploring alternatives.

Rockstar North is currently facing an employment tribunal regarding the alleged wrongful termination of 31 employees. Additionally, the game has been subject to significant gameplay leaks, impacting Rockstar's control over its reveal.
