Grand Theft Auto VI is set to introduce a more dynamic and nuanced approach to losing the police, aiming to make evading law enforcement feel less like an all-powerful superpower and more like a risky "hit-and-run" maneuver. Rockstar Games has detailed how the new "heat system" in the upcoming title will require players to actively change their appearance and avoid drawing attention to themselves to successfully escape authorities.
In a gameplay demonstration, Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar, explained that the intention is to support the narrative of protagonists Lucia and Jason being on the run. This means that simply outrunning police cruisers will no longer be a guaranteed escape. Instead, players will need to employ a variety of tactics, such as changing clothes, altering their vehicle, or blending into the environment.
"Again, if I take off here, I should be fine," Nelson stated, describing a scenario where he had to escape the police. "We’re really trying to encourage this hit-and-run style of gameplay. So, the police are looking for me. We have this heat system, and they know what I look like and what I’m wearing. Here’s a pair of glasses–I'll put on this and this baseball hat. But they still know what I'm wearing, so I would need to go to a clothing store or call my personal vehicle, which has changes of outfits in the trunk."
This system is designed to offer players choices. While the option to cause chaos and engage in prolonged shootouts with law enforcement will still exist, doing so will carry more significant consequences. The developers want to avoid the scenario in Grand Theft Auto V where players could become virtually untouchable by the police.
Interactions with non-player characters (NPCs) have also been expanded. These interactions can range from casual encounters to confrontations that can quickly escalate and trigger a wanted level. The game aims to make these situations feel earned and offer multiple ways to resolve them. Even non-violent crimes, like stealing a car or causing a disturbance, can initiate a pursuit.
Players will be able to lose their wanted level by successfully getting out of the authorities' immediate vicinity. However, continued suspicious behavior or being recognized will raise their heat level again. The system encourages players to be strategic, using elements like changing outfits or disguising their vehicle to evade detection.
GTA 6 is scheduled for release on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The game has already seen significant pre-order interest, reportedly nearing six million orders more than a month before its launch.
