Grand Theft Auto 6 will incorporate a significantly enhanced weather system, featuring dynamic conditions that range from gentle rainbows to intense hurricanes. Rockstar vice president of art for lighting and rendering, Owen Shepherd, revealed that the game will include "new fully dynamic cloudscapes that roll across the map," localized rain showers, and puddles that form after precipitation. Under specific lighting conditions, players can expect to see rainbows.
Shepherd described the potential for severe weather events, stating that "heavy clouds, strong winds, dense atmospherics and a lot of rain combine so that everything is dripping wet, water is gushing off roof edges and lampposts, thunder rumbles and flashes of lightning light up the clouds dramatically." While the extent to which these weather phenomena will impact core gameplay activities like car chases or heists remains to be seen, it suggests that environmental conditions could play a more significant role.
The robust weather system is also expected to be a feature in GTA Online's multiplayer component upon its release. This builds upon the existing community engagement with weather in GTA Online, which includes unofficial forecasting services and mods that introduce more complex or localized weather patterns on role-play servers. Players have also shown a keen interest in the dynamic weather of Red Dead Redemption 2, dedicating time to understanding its lightning strike mechanics.
Beyond the environmental features, Grand Theft Auto 6 will also boast a diverse ecosystem with 170 distinct animal species. This includes approximately 60 types of birds, over 30 land mammals, and various marine life such as manatees, sharks, rays, turtles, and jellyfish. This extensive bestiary continues Rockstar's trend of detailed wildlife implementation, seen previously in Red Dead Redemption 2.
In separate news concerning Rockstar Games, the company is involved in ongoing legal disputes. One case involves former employees terminated for alleged "gross misconduct," which the employees contest as "union-busting." Rockstar revealed the presence of an informant within a union Discord server who was active for over two years prior to these dismissals. Additionally, Rockstar has issued warnings to modders regarding the creation of unofficial main story expansions, unauthorized ports, and mods that merge GTA maps, ahead of Grand Theft Auto 6's release.
