GTA 6 Ultimate Edition Sparks Fan Outcry Over Price and Exclusives

Rockstar Games has announced that the standard edition of Grand Theft Auto 6 will launch at $79.99, a price point that has surprised and relieved many fans who feared a higher cost for the highly anticipated title. While this figure is above the typical $69.99 for new major releases, it has been met with acceptance, with some players deeming the cost reasonable.

Despite the relatively standard pricing for the base game, a $99 "Ultimate Edition" has drawn significant criticism. This premium version includes exclusive in-game cosmetic items and vehicles, prompting concerns among players about the franchise's direction. Unlike traditional physical editions, the "Ultimate Edition" will contain a code in a box rather than a disc, a decision that has drawn ire from those who prefer physical media.

Fans have expressed frustration that some of the bonus content is purely aesthetic, including access to five exclusive shops for character customization such as a salon for haircuts and makeup, a streetwear store, and a tattoo parlor. Although these features do not impact gameplay, they tap into the appeal of role-playing and customization that has long been a draw for Grand Theft Auto players. The prospect of "FOMO"—fear of missing out—on these cosmetic options has fueled discontent, with some players comparing it unfavorably to past monetization strategies.

Further exacerbating these concerns is the potential for future content to be locked behind Rockstar's GTA+ subscription service. Given the success of this model in Grand Theft Auto V, many fans anticipate similar monetization schemes for GTA 6, leading to fears that important aspects of the game could become paywalled. The inclusion of exclusive customization shops in the Ultimate Edition is seen by some as an early indicator of this trend, raising anxieties about the long-term value and accessibility of the Grand Theft Auto franchise.
