Grand Theft Auto 6 will offer players significant flexibility in defining the relationship between protagonists Jason and Lucia, according to Rockstar North's head of development, Rob Nelson. While the game's narrative will necessitate their partnership for survival, players can choose to maintain a strictly platonic bond between the two characters.
Nelson elaborated in previews with IGN and The New York Times that maintaining Jason and Lucia's relationship, whether romantic or otherwise, will require active effort from the player. This involves earning money outside of main story missions through activities such as participating in monster truck races, playing pool, or engaging in scuba diving for treasure. Additionally, players will need to ensure the protagonists make time for each other and respond to in-game communication to foster a positive partnership.
"It’s new for GTA, this idea of your actions having meaning in terms of how you treat your partner or how violent you are," Nelson told The New York Times, suggesting that certain actions may negatively impact their relationship. While specifics were not confirmed, he implied that behaviors like frequenting strip clubs might not be conducive to a healthy partnership.
Despite the narrative's setup, which will see Jason and Lucia working together as partners in crime due to their circumstances, Nelson confirmed that a platonic dynamic is entirely possible. "The narrative is structured in such a way that the circumstances they find themselves in require them to stay together for most of the story and work together. At the very least they will get through most things as partners in crime," he told IGN. Players who are not invested in a romantic storyline can therefore opt out of pursuing one.
"I will say that whether you’re getting in trouble, or you’re running from the cops, or getting in a car, or waiting for the other one — playing as them together feels very cool. It feels like you’re taking care of them, if that’s something you’re into," Nelson added in the same IGN interview, highlighting the collaborative gameplay experience.
This approach allows players to customize their experience with the central duo, offering an option for those who prefer to focus on the criminal partnership without developing a romantic element. While previous leaks have indicated the presence of male and female nudity in the game, details regarding specific romantic or adult situations between Jason and Lucia have not yet been detailed in the official previews.
