Grand Theft Auto 6 will present a world that acts upon the player, moving away from the 'all-powerful' protagonist dynamic seen in GTA 5 and earlier titles, according to Rockstar Games boss Rob Nelson.
In a discussion with IGN, Nelson explained that unlike previous games where the player was essentially the only one with an "invisible arsenal hidden away" and NPCs would flee in terror, the world in GTA 6 is designed to be more dynamic. "The world will act upon you as well as you acting upon the world," Nelson stated. NPCs will possess their own impulses and may react to or even pursue the player.
Rockstar aims for a more unpredictable and engaging experience by ensuring players are not the only dangerous entity in the game world. This approach mirrors the design philosophy introduced in Red Dead Redemption 2, where gangs could attack players and other unpredictable events occurred. "You are still powerful and capable, but you are not the only one capable of violence or the only one with weapons or the only crazy person out there," Nelson said. "It makes the world far more unpredictable and interesting."
The narrative of GTA 6, which centers on partners in crime Jason and Lucia, focuses on "criminals on the run." However, their actions are constrained by the need to "do what they need to do while not drawing unnecessary attention." While engaging in missions, robberies, or self-defense is permissible, Nelson indicated that consistently exceeding necessity or engaging in gratuitous actions could alter the player's "criminal profile."
Furthermore, law enforcement in GTA 6 will also be more advanced. A new "heat" system will enable police to recognize players even if they attempt to alter their appearance with items like hats or glasses, requiring a change of clothes to evade identification.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is slated for release on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Reports suggest the game may have already achieved nearly 6 million in pre-release sales.
