Grand Theft Auto VI will reportedly feature an abundance of small, granular details, akin to the dynamic horse testicle physics seen in Red Dead Redemption II, according to reporter Jason Schreier. These details are part of Rockstar Games' commitment to immersing players in its expansive worlds.
Schreier discussed his findings from interviews with Rockstar developers, revealing that the game's road design has been intentionally altered. Roads in GTA 6 are narrower than in Grand Theft Auto V, a design choice that has led to denser traffic scenarios and necessitated the creation of more environmental elements to accommodate the change. Aaron Garbut, a Rockstar developer, noted that this decision created a cascade of effects throughout development.
Development for Grand Theft Auto VI also experienced what Schreier described as "dark" years between 2019 and 2022. This period was marked not only by the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic but also by significant internal debate regarding the game's balance between realism and its signature arcade-style gameplay. This tension reportedly led to extensive experimentation with various systems, including a more realistic weapon system that would limit the number of weapons players could carry. After months or years of development, Rockstar ultimately opted to retain the familiar weapon wheel system.
A key aspect of GTA 6's development, as highlighted by Schreier, is the autonomy granted to individual developers. This approach allows for the spontaneous inclusion of intricate details that may not be explicitly directed by leadership. Schreier cited the example of the horse's testicles in Red Dead Redemption II reacting to weather changes as an instance of such emergent detail, which was not a planned feature but rather an organically implemented one. GTA 6 is expected to continue this practice, with developers adding unique touches that might go unnoticed by many.
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The title is anticipated to be a major commercial success, with early indicators suggesting it is already outperforming other major AAA game releases in pre-release tracking.
