GTA 6 Will Feature Over 170 Unique Animals, Potentially More Than Red Dead Redemption 2

Rockstar Games has revealed new details about Grand Theft Auto 6's intricate wildlife system, expanding on the game's depiction of Leonida's diverse ecosystems. Following an early August gameplay debut, the developer shared further information through a Game Informer cover story, highlighting over 170 unique animal species planned for the game. This roster includes terrestrial creatures like monkeys, bears, and armadillos, as well as marine life such as sharks and manatees, reflecting Florida's real-world fauna.

Detailed Ecosystems and Interactions

According to Michael Kane, Rockstar's vice president of dynamic art, the aim was to faithfully represent the varied animal life found across Leonida's urban, rural, aquatic, and wetland environments. Each animal will exhibit distinct movement behaviors, and their visual fidelity is expected to be exceptionally high, with simulated fur that reacts to environmental conditions like getting wet and accumulating dirt. Marine animals will also feature advanced visual effects, including iridescence and bioluminescence.

Hints from Game Informer's coverage and a new screenshot featuring protagonist Jason with a rifle suggest that a hunting system similar to Red Dead Redemption 2 may return. However, the article also speculates on the possibility of more non-violent interactions with the wildlife. The presence of a scuba diving minigame and the mention of animals categorized as Rare, Discoverable, and Legendary could point towards activities beyond hunting, such as photography or collection, aligning with the game's smartphone integration and modern setting.

Beyond Hunting: New Possibilities

The inclusion of over 60 types of birds further fuels speculation about potential birdwatching activities, a pursuit that has seen a resurgence in popularity. The extensive detail dedicated to the animal inhabitants suggests that Rockstar is keen on showcasing Leonida's unique ecology in depth. Whether through active hunting or more passive observation, the developers appear poised to offer players a rich array of interactions with the game's diverse fauna, potentially surpassing the scope of wildlife engagement seen in previous titles like Red Dead Redemption 2.
