Viral social media posts and articles falsely claiming that Grand Theft Auto 6 will have a physical disc release have been debunked by official sources. These reports gained traction after an image circulated online showing a supposed response from Rockstar Support stating that a physical copy would be available in the "following months."
The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the support email was indeed a legitimate response to an inquiry about a disc version. However, the email's phrasing was misleading and did not indicate a change in the company's release strategy. A source with knowledge of Rockstar's launch plans informed The Hollywood Reporter that there are "no plans" for GTA 6 discs to be manufactured, neither at launch nor in the subsequent months.
Rockstar Support's reference to a "physical copy" pertained to the officially announced version which includes only a code within the box, not a game disc. The phrase "following months" was intended to refer to the period after pre-orders went live this week and following the associated announcements, not the months after the game's release in November.
This clarification addresses earlier headlines based on reports from a Polish website that cited an "insider" claiming a disc version would arrive in December. These reports have also been confirmed as inaccurate.
While the decision to omit a disc version may disappoint some core gamers, industry analysts suggest it aligns with commercial logic. Retailers have reportedly expressed reluctance to sell GTA 6 due to the absence of a physical disc in the boxed version. Separately, a recent IGN poll indicated that over 70% of respondents intend to purchase the more expensive $100 Ultimate Edition of the game.
