GTA 6 Won't Be 'Too Specific About Any Particular Person, Event, or Movement,' Rockstar Says

Rockstar Games intends for Grand Theft Auto 6 to avoid specific real-world political commentary, focusing instead on satire and the general atmosphere of its setting. Senior vice president of narrative, Rupert Humphries, explained that while previous entries like GTA 4 touched upon issues like post-9/11 national security, the development team aims for GTA 6 to be timely without directly mirroring current events.

"Because we are trying to make games that feel very specific to the moment they are released, but at the same time, not reflective of the exact world we live in, we don't want to be too specific about any particular person, event, movement or anything like that," Humphries told Love Magazine. He noted that the long development cycles for games could lead to content feeling dated if it were too closely tied to specific, contemporary occurrences.

Instead of direct political satire, Rockstar is focusing on building a vibrant world filled with characters and cultural themes. Humphries stated that the developer conducted research trips to capture the essence of Florida, which serves as the inspiration for the game's fictional Leonida. Storytelling will be conveyed through various in-game elements such as election signs, campaign robocalls, and radio talk shows, allowing the game to explore contemporary issues through its own original narratives and characters.

GTA 6 will feature dual protagonists, Jason and Lucia, as they navigate a crime spree across Leonida. The game is set to release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles on November 19, 2026. Industry analysts anticipate significant sales, with projections suggesting up to $5.2 billion in revenue by the end of its launch week. This follows the continued success of Grand Theft Auto 5, which has sold over 200 million copies worldwide.
