Grand Theft Auto 6 will not be released on physical discs, though Take-Two Interactive has not entirely ruled out the possibility of future physical releases for major titles, according to CEO Strauss Zelnick. Zelnick stated in an interview with IGN that discs "don't really make sense for the consumer" in the current gaming landscape, where over 90% of Take-Two's sales are already digital.
"Everyone's connected. So it's just a matter of the most efficient way to get the title into people's hands," Zelnick explained, emphasizing the prevalence of online connectivity for modern games. While GTA 6 will be available at retailers, it will be through a code-in-a-box format rather than a disc.
Despite this, Zelnick indicated a degree of openness to physical media for future projects. "I wouldn't rule out anything at this stage of the game," he said when asked about the potential for GTA 6 discs. "What we've announced so far is what we're doing at the moment, but we are always open minded."
Take-Two does not anticipate any negative financial repercussions from a digital-only approach for GTA 6, and indeed expects it to be more profitable. Zelnick foresees a continued shift towards digital distribution, likening the potential future of physical games to the niche market for vinyl records. He asserted that making GTA 6 a digital-only release was "what was right" for the game, and not influenced by Sony's announced discontinuation of physical disc support in January 2028.
GTA 6 is slated to launch on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The game will retail for $80, a price Take-Two considers appropriate for its offering.
