A recently released mod for Grand Theft Auto V introduces 235 destructible "Flock" cameras to the game world, allowing players to engage in virtual acts of anti-surveillance. The mod, developed by Morry and known as GTALPR (Grand Theft Automated License Plate Reader), adds functional cameras that photograph player vehicles and alert law enforcement.
These cameras are not merely static environmental props. They actively photograph players as they drive by, and these images can be saved and used by the player. Furthermore, the cameras serve as an in-game alert system, flagging player activity to the police, sometimes even when no laws are being broken, mirroring real-world criticisms of such systems. The modder expressed a strong sentiment about private surveillance companies, stating that "Flock is a scourge on America" and referencing the company's extensive network of cameras.
Destroying these cameras yields components that can be sold for in-game currency, with each bundle offering $600. For players seeking a more directed challenge, the mod includes speedrun functionality. This feature tracks statistics such as the number of cameras destroyed and the time taken to destroy specific quantities, up to all 235 cameras. Players can also place their own cameras within the game to capture snapshots of their exploits.
Morry highlighted that the 235 cameras added in the mod represent a fraction of real-world surveillance, noting that Los Angeles County alone has approximately ten times that number installed. The modder pointed out that while destroying these cameras in GTA V offers rewards, doing so in reality is illegal and does not provide any in-game benefits. The mod is available for download on Github.
