ArenaNet has announced a significant change to its live service model for Guild Wars 2, now including all Living World seasonal add-ons with the game's expansions. This move eliminates the need for separate purchases of these narrative-focused content updates, which previously served to bridge the story between major expansions.
Under the new system, players who purchase an expansion such as Heart of Thorns will receive the corresponding Living World season free of charge. Previously, these seasons were sold individually, often leaving players who only bought expansions missing key plot points and character developments. This integration ensures a more complete narrative experience without additional cost.
Specifically, owners of the Guild Wars 2 base game will now receive Living World season one. The Heart of Thorns expansion includes season two. Seasons three and four are bundled with the Path of Fire expansion, and the final Living World season is included with End of Dragons. Any previously missing episodes from these seasons will be automatically added to the accounts of players who own the relevant expansions.
ArenaNet is also providing compensation for players who purchased Living World DLC after September 12th. These players will receive an in-game currency refund in the form of gems. This applies to those who bought individual DLCs as well as bundles that included the appropriate expansions.
"Our goal with these changes is to make jumping into Guild Wars 2 as seamless as possible," ArenaNet stated in a blog post. "By increasing the value of our expansions and simplifying the purchasing options, we are making it easier than ever for new and returning players to dive into the vast, evolving world of Tyria."
This update comes as ArenaNet is also preparing for the future of the franchise, with Guild Wars 3 announced and a beta release planned for autumn 2027. Guild Wars 2 itself is slated for rejuvenation, featuring refreshed older content and a Hall of Monuments system that will allow players to unlock rewards in Guild Wars 3 by completing specific tasks in Guild Wars 2. The original Guild Wars is also seeing renewed attention through the Guild Wars Reforged project, which includes a mobile port and recent updates. This DLC model change appears to be part of a broader effort to streamline the entry point for players interested in the Guild Wars series.
