Guillermo del Toro's 1997 directorial debut in Hollywood, the sci-fi horror film Mimic, is now available to stream for free on Tubi. The movie, which del Toro has publicly described as a deeply negative experience, features one of the director's most memorable and unsettling monsters.

Mimic centers on Dr. Susan Tyler, an entomologist played by Mira Sorvino, who engineers a special breed of insect called the Judas breed. This engineered species is designed to eliminate cockroaches, the carriers of a deadly disease known as Sickler's Disease that has claimed the lives of hundreds of children. Tyler makes the Judas bugs sterile to prevent unintended consequences, and her plan initially succeeds, eradicating the disease and saving thousands. She also meets her future husband, Dr. Peter Mann, during this period.

However, the story takes a turn a few years later when a police officer, portrayed by Josh Brolin, investigates mysterious occurrences in New York City's subway system. Tyler and Mann discover that the Judas bugs have not only survived but have evolved over several generations. They have mutated into human-sized predators, dubbed the "Long Johns," capable of mimicking human appearance and behavior to blend into their environment.

The creature design, brought to life by Doug Jones, is central to the film's horror. The Long John is depicted as a grotesque, human-sized cockroach with extra limbs and translucent wings. Del Toro focuses on auditory and textural horror, emphasizing the creature's unsettling sounds and physical transformations, particularly a scene where the bug shifts from insectoid to humanoid. The film effectively uses shadows and suggestion to create tension, though a brief reliance on CGI moments is noted as detracting from the scares.

Mira Sorvino in Mimic

Del Toro has been open about the difficulties during Mimic's production, citing constant interference from the studio, Dimension Films, and Harvey Weinstein, which he felt compromised the film's direction and narrative integrity. He described the experience as one of the worst of his career, leading him to nearly abandon working in Hollywood. This behind-the-scenes conflict is apparent in the film's inconsistent tone, which shifts between a thoughtful exploration of scientific consequences and more conventional late-'90s action sequences, culminating in a studio-mandated ending that feels disconnected from the rest of the story.

Despite the production struggles and the narrative criticisms, Mimic is still regarded as a showcase for del Toro's visual style and his ability to create memorable, frightening creatures. The Long John, though perhaps less complex than some of del Toro's later monster creations, remains a disturbing and iconic figure in his filmography. The film is currently free to stream on Tubi.
