A new installment in the popular Half-Life 2 mod series, Entropy: Zero, is in development, aiming to deliver a stealth-focused prequel titled Entropy: Zero 2 - Progenitors. This entry shifts the focus from the standard Combine trooper to a highly agile assassin, drawing comparisons to the black ops ninjas from the original Half-Life.
Progenitors is set in the aftermath of the Seven Hour War, where the Combine have established control over Earth. The player assumes the role of an assassin tasked with eliminating the "Progenitor," the entity from which the Combine's soldiers were originally derived. The narrative seeks to expand upon the established Half-Life lore with a unique perspective on the conflict.
The mod series has a history of blending and referencing different eras of Half-Life, with Entropy: Zero 2 having previously explored an Aperture Science facility. Progenitors appears to draw inspiration from Half-Life: Opposing Force, evident in its visual design, including a "dark Nazi future" aesthetic for the Combine United Nations logo, reminiscent of MachineGames' recent Wolfenstein titles.
Gameplay in Progenitors is shaping up to be ambitious, with developer Blixibon sharing demonstration clips showcasing new mechanics and weapons. These clips highlight elements that suggest an immersive sim approach, or at least a hybrid shooter-immersive sim experience akin to games like Dark Messiah or the newer Wolfenstein games. One showcased mechanic involves players pickpocketing enemy soldiers and using thrown objects, like a beer bottle, as distractions.
Despite the ambitious scope, the development of Entropy: Zero 2 - Progenitors has faced challenges. The developer has alluded to difficulties and creative burnout among team members in recent blog posts. However, it appears the team is moving past these obstacles. Further updates on the project can be found on its ModDB page and Blixibon's YouTube channel.
