Half-Life 2 Mod The Temple Blends Iron Lung Terror with Airships and Space Travel

A new total conversion mod for Half-Life 2, titled The Temple, aims to deliver a unique brand of vehicular horror inspired by the acclaimed indie title Iron Lung. However, The Temple expands upon the submarine-based terror by incorporating an airship for aerial exploration and a space shuttle for interplanetary travel.

The mod is set on an alien planet characterized by its aquatic environment and colossal concrete structures. Players will navigate these mysterious locales using three distinct vehicles: a submarine for the ocean depths, an airship for exploring the skies and abandoned towers, and a space shuttle for journeys to orbiting asteroidal moons. This multi-vehicle approach offers a varied gameplay experience distinct from its primary inspiration.

The Temple originated as a pair of maps for MapLabs, a platform showcasing maps from Source engine modding competitions. This initial release was brief, lasting approximately 20 minutes. The upcoming total conversion will significantly expand upon these existing maps, adding a third map and extending the total playtime to over two hours of exploration-focused sci-fi horror.

A trailer for the mod demonstrates its three vehicles in action, highlighting large-scale structures and environmental design. The Temple also incorporates elements reminiscent of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, including invisible aquatic monsters. To guide players, a talking crow, whose language is understandable to the player, will provide assistance throughout the experience.

The creator, known as Klems, has stated that The Temple is scheduled for release "very soon, possibly next month." While a precise launch date has not yet been announced, the mod promises a substantial horror experience within the Half-Life 2 engine.
