Halo Studios may have offered a glimpse into the future of the franchise with a secret ending cutscene in the recently released Halo: Campaign Evolved. Those who manage to complete the game on Legendary difficulty have uncovered a post-credits scene that strongly suggests a remake of Halo 2 is planned.
The secret ending features Sergeant Johnson watching a clip of the original game's secret ending before he departs. As he leaves, Johnson explicitly states, "See you in the sequel." This remark, combined with further in-game teases, has led many to believe a Halo 2 remake is on the horizon.
Adding to the speculation, the cutscene also shows 343 Guilty Spark flying towards a planet, a clear reference to the events that would transpire in the original Halo 2. This sequence implies a direct continuation of the narrative following the events of Halo: Campaign Evolved, aligning with the plot of the 2004 sequel.
While Halo Studios and Xbox have yet to officially announce a Halo 2 remake, the inclusion of this tease is significant. The developers have recently canceled a multiplayer Halo game codenamed "Ekur," reportedly in development by Certain Affinity, leaving Halo: Campaign Evolved as the sole focus for single-player fans. The original Halo 2 was released in 2004 and later received a remaster as part of the Master Chief Collection in 2014. Halo: Campaign Evolved, the remake of the first game, is scheduled for release on July 28, 2026.
IGN's review of Halo: Campaign Evolved described it as a "lean retread" that "speaks to the series' timelessness and adds a decent set of new missions," noting it serves as a "test run for its future with Unreal Engine."
