A rumor suggesting Activision plans a complete reboot of the Halo franchise, discarding existing lore for a fresh start, has sparked a debate among fans online. While this rumor should be approached with caution due to the lack of official confirmation regarding Activision's plans, it has nonetheless ignited discussions about the best path forward for the sci-fi series.
Some fans believe that despite perceived missteps in recent years, elements from newer Halo titles could be retained. A segment of the community expressed a preference for retconning Halo 4 and subsequent entries while preserving the lore established by Bungie's original games. This approach, they argue, would allow for the continuation of beloved Master Chief narratives while simultaneously opening avenues for Activision to explore new eras within the Halo universe.
"I’m against a full reboot," one fan commented on Reddit. "But if they said the Bungie era is canon and everything else going forward is being rebooted, I wouldn’t be very upset. Halo 4 has grown on me over the yearsm but 5 and Infinite’s story led nowhere."
Another fan proposed a different approach, suggesting a restart akin to the Terminator franchise, essentially beginning again from Halo 3. However, this idea was met with reservations about nullifying player investment and potentially signaling a lack of direction for the series. This same fan posited that a full reboot might be a practical necessity, citing the advancing age of Master Chief's voice actor, Steve Downes, and the inevitability of a recast for future installments. "Steve Downes I just don't think is a long-term option for Chief anymore at his age and a recast is inevitable," they stated. "You can keep Taylor as Cortana and the Campaign Evolved recasts but a reboot would immediately clear the deck for new versions of the characters and new actors."
Echoing the sentiment about recasting, another fan noted, "Honestly might be a good call, even if a lot of Halo fans hate the idea. If they’re wanting to grow the franchise again and get new eyes why saddle this fresh beginning with over 20 years of games, comics, and books. Plus, Steve Downes ain’t getting any younger and will probably be 80 by the time this game releases."
Conversely, some players feel it is time to move beyond Master Chief entirely and focus on new characters and stories, drawing parallels to games like Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach. "Reboot? Okay thats fine," one fan said. "Just make it a Halo reboot and not Master Chief reboot. Give me Halo games with new characters akin to Reach or ODST."
Others expressed concern about discarding established lore. "I think it would be a shame to completely overwrite everything after Halo 3 since there is some good stuff there in the storylines told outside of the games," a fan shared. "I think the best bet would be to just leave the current storyline as is and go either forward or backwards in the timeline and tell new stories with new characters that are mostly disconnected from what came before."
It was recently confirmed that Activision would establish a new team to develop the next Halo game, following significant layoffs at Halo Studios. The extent of involvement from Call of Duty studios, such as Sledgehammer Games, which has been rumored to be interested in the franchise, remains unclear. The development timeline for the next Halo title is also uncertain, particularly if Activision opts for a complete overhaul. The direction Activision ultimately chooses will be a significant factor in the franchise's future.
