The landscape of the Halo franchise has dramatically shifted, with Activision now set to develop the next installment. This transition, occurring amidst significant layoffs at Halo Studios and Xbox-wide restructuring, has ignited apprehension among fans regarding the series' future, particularly concerning the fate of Halo Fest and the potential for a lore reboot.
Xbox Studios chief Matt Booty confirmed the change in a statement, noting that 268 roles were being eliminated across Halo Studios and other first-party teams. He also stated that Activision would lead the next Halo title with a dedicated team, separate from Call of Duty development, while a smaller team at Halo Studios would continue to support existing games. This move places Halo under the same publisher as Call of Duty, a development that many fans find difficult to process given the franchise's history.
Fans have voiced their concerns across social media and forums. A primary worry is that Activision might choose to reboot Halo's lore, potentially discarding the narrative built over 25 years of games, novels, and other media. This mirrors anxieties seen when other major franchises have undergone publisher changes. "Honestly that’s my biggest fear. I fear that they’ll just do a general reset on Halo’s established lore. If that happens, I’m out," one user tweeted.
Conversely, some players express a desire for a narrative reset, particularly if it means moving away from the direction taken in recent titles. "Frankly I'm out if they DON'T do a semi-reboot and axe ALL of 343's lore. There is zero future for any stories which share a continuity with Halo 4, 5, and Infinite," another user stated. Some are even calling for a return to the post-Halo 3 era, focusing on a war story about humanity's rebuilding efforts. However, others dismiss the idea of a full reboot as "another terrible idea in a string of terrible ideas."
The status of Halo Fest Seattle, an event planned for December to celebrate the franchise's 25th anniversary, is also in question. With the significant layoffs impacting Halo Studios, the continuation of the live event is uncertain, and Xbox has yet to provide official comment.
Activision president Rob Kostich stated the company's goal is to "make the greatest Halo game ever, worthy of its universe and legacy, while staying true to what made players love it in the first place." This statement offers little clarity on the specific direction the franchise will take. The prospect of discarding decades of established lore and world-building is a concern for many, especially given the rich untapped material present in the Halo novels that could serve as inspiration for future game adaptations, similar to Halo Reach.
