The alien faction known as the Endless, heavily teased in Halo Infinite, has been fully revealed in a parting blog post from the former Halo Studios, formerly 343 Industries. The revelation comes as the franchise undergoes a significant management change, with Activision now overseeing the development of future Halo games. This marks a departure for the formerly in-house development team, which has seen the majority of its staff laid off.
The blog post, authored by community writer Alex Wakeford, offers a glimpse into what could have been for the Halo universe. It describes the Endless, also referred to as the Xalanyn, children of Abaddon, as a race imprisoned by the Forerunners on Zeta Halo due to their ability to survive the activation of the Halo rings. The accompanying imagery showcases diverse members of the Endless, each paired with a smaller, distinct creature, suggesting a complex ecosystem or perhaps an ancient connection to existing Halo species.
One notable reveal is the potential link between the Endless and the Engineers, an alien race previously associated with the Covenant. The blog post implies that Engineers may have been created by or are otherwise connected to the Endless. The visual presentation of the Endless, with smaller accompanying creatures, also hints at a possible new enemy dynamic, potentially replacing the traditional Covenant factions for Master Chief to confront.
However, the future of this revealed lore and the Endless faction itself remains uncertain. Reports suggest that the new development team under Activision may not be directly involved with the work previously undertaken by Halo Studios. While it is understood that Activision's future Halo title will not directly contradict established canon, it is unclear how much of the content previewed in Wakeford's final blog post will be incorporated. This shift in management for Halo is part of Xbox's broader strategic realignment, which has involved significant restructuring, including layoffs and project cancellations across various studios.
