Halo Studio Developer Promoted, Then Laid Off in Xbox Restructuring

Halo Studios, formerly known as 343 Industries, has been impacted by recent Xbox layoffs and corporate restructuring. At least one developer at the studio experienced a rapid shift from promotion to termination within approximately 48 hours.

Xbox announced a new round of layoffs and studio realignments on September 22 as part of an ongoing corporate "reset." According to Xbox executive Matt Booty, over 250 employees were laid off on Tuesday, following a larger round of job cuts in July. Concurrently, the Halo franchise is being moved under Activision, and Halo Studios is being reorganized into a support team.

Cinematic Director Josh Daniels was among the employees affected by these layoffs. He shared on LinkedIn that he had recently received a promotion before his termination. "Promoted and laid off in the same week is pretty wild," Daniels posted. He added that he would be taking time offline but was seeking opportunities in Cinematic Direction or Production roles.

The circumstances surrounding these cuts, including promoting and then firing employees within the same week, suggest a lack of cohesive planning within Xbox's recent strategic shifts. This follows a similar instance where a Gears of War developer was laid off just days after celebrating the game reaching its gold status.
