Sixteen years after its initial launch as a free browser game, the notoriously gory and chaotic physics title Happy Wheels has resurfaced on Steam, achieving significant success.
Originally released in 2010, Happy Wheels became a viral sensation largely thanks to its frequent appearance on the YouTube channels of popular 'Let's Players' like PewDiePie. Its accessibility as a free, browser-based game meant a wide audience could easily engage with its unique premise: navigating treacherous obstacle courses with a cast of often unfortunate characters. The game's humor stemmed from its over-the-top violence and the frequent, often hilarious, failures of its player characters.
Creator Jim Bonacci noted that after the initial hype faded, the game had been "floating on an isolated island in space." In an effort to revive it, Bonacci brought Happy Wheels to the Steam Store. The response exceeded his expectations, with the game garnering 750,000 wishlists within two weeks of its store page going live.
Bonacci expressed his surprise, stating, "I realistically was thinking maybe 5k at best." The overwhelming number of wishlists indicated a sustained interest in the game, whether from players seeking a nostalgic trip or those discovering it for the first time. Currently, a week after its Steam launch, Happy Wheels boasts a 94% positive review rating from over 3,000 players.
The game remains available for free on its original website, totaljerkface.com, as well as on the App Store and Google Play. The Steam version is priced at $4.99 and offers benefits such as an ad-free experience, playtime tracking on player profiles, game statistics, and up to 80 unlockable achievements, along with the ability to download levels for offline play.
