Eric Barone, the creator behind the immensely successful Stardew Valley, has provided an update on his upcoming action-RPG and life sim, Haunted Chocolatier. The developer shared insights into the development process, highlighting the meticulous attention to detail he applies to every aspect of the game, particularly its recipe book interface.

Barone described the recipe book interface as a feature that needs to be "seamless, clear, intuitive, satisfying, aesthetic" and, in essence, perfect. He explained that this particular UI element has undergone numerous iterations. "To me, it’s not a simple task, as I torture myself over every last detail," Barone stated. He emphasized the importance of this interface, noting that players will use it frequently and thus it "has to be perfect." The goal is to enable players to achieve their objectives with minimal clicks, presenting just the right amount of information without overwhelming or under-delivering.

The layout of this data is also crucial, according to Barone. He believes data must be grouped into "compelling, intuitive and easy to read/understand groupings" to be visually appealing and intriguing. He considers these functional and aesthetic requirements to be the "bare minimum" that players might overlook. Beyond mere comfort, Barone aims to "delight the player," a pursuit that typically requires him to iterate on elements multiple times before reaching satisfaction. The scope of Haunted Chocolatier, described as a "big game," means there are many such details demanding his focus.

Barone also addressed the lack of new screenshots, comparing them to serving "half-baked bread." He noted that he is fortunate to be in a position where he does not need to market the game aggressively, allowing him to proceed at his own pace. Stardew Valley has achieved significant commercial success, selling over 50 million copies, which provides Barone with the financial freedom to pursue his exacting development standards for Haunted Chocolatier.
