Development on ConcernedApe's highly anticipated game, Haunted Chocolatier, is proceeding deliberately as creator Eric Barone prioritizes achieving a high degree of polish for its core gameplay elements. Barone, also known as the sole developer behind Stardew Valley, recently elaborated on the game's protracted development cycle in a blog post, stating that he is being "very thoughtful about every aspect of the game."
Barone emphasized that elements players will interact with frequently must be "seamless, clear, intuitive, satisfying, aesthetic." He specifically cited the recipe book for chocolate making as an area that has undergone significant revision. This system is intended to be a major component of Haunted Chocolatier's gameplay, and Barone aims to present players with the "just the right amount" of information without overwhelming them. He noted that achieving this balance requires multiple rounds of iteration.
This dedication to refinement is also why Barone has been hesitant to showcase extensive gameplay footage of Haunted Chocolatier. He expressed a preference for presenting a "fully baked bread" rather than something incomplete, and he fears that revealing early versions of game mechanics could lead to player disappointment if those elements change before the final release. "I know that many parts of the game will likely evolve and change before release," Barone wrote, "so if I reveal them early, I risk disappointing players if the final product does not match their expectations."
Haunted Chocolatier, which centers on creating sweets and managing a confectionery, does not yet have a release date. Barone and his team are currently deeply involved in the game's development, working to deliver what he hopes will be a spooky and satisfying experience.
