Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone, the developer behind the hit farming simulator Stardew Valley, has revealed that his next game, Haunted Chocolatier, will feature more robust action-RPG gameplay. In an interview with British GQ, Barone stated that the game's primary focus will be on adventuring, acquiring better equipment, and increasing character power. This includes the presence of monsters and boss fights, specifically catering to players who enjoyed the mining aspects of Stardew Valley.
While combat will be a more central element, Barone clarified that Haunted Chocolatier will retain the "town game" structure, suggesting players can still expect to build a life in a new community and develop relationships with its inhabitants while managing their business. Previous glimpses of the game have showcased combat mechanics such as bosses, shields capable of stunning enemies, and other offensive tools, hinting at a more action-oriented experience than Stardew Valley's relatively simple combat.
Barone also mentioned that Haunted Chocolatier will explore darker themes and draws inspiration from surrealist filmmaker David Lynch. He noted that the game has been in development for over four years, a period comparable to Stardew Valley's initial development. Barone expressed the pressure of public expectation, acknowledging that deviating from certain development paths could potentially disappoint a large audience. He has not yet provided a release window, with reports suggesting the game might be significantly larger in scope than its predecessor.
