Hayley Atwell, the actress behind Peggy Carter, has stated that her character's death in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was a "complete disservice to the character." Atwell shared her feelings at the For the Love of Fantasy & Sci-Fi convention in London, explaining that she had attempted to suggest alternative ways for Carter to meet her end, but these ideas were not incorporated.
In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, an alternate version of Peggy Carter, known as Captain Carter, wields a Captain America-style shield. She is part of the Illuminati team that is swiftly eliminated by Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch. Atwell described her character's fate as "so small," noting that she was effectively "frisbeed to death."
While the scene served to establish the immense power of Wanda and her descent, Atwell felt the portrayal of Carter was lacking. The character utters the familiar line, "I could do this all day," before Wanda uses Carter's own shield to bisect her. Atwell found this ironic and demeaning to the character she portrays.
"I felt that was like a bum steer and a complete disservice to the character," Atwell said. "I tried on set to kind of go, 'Can I just add? Can I just suggest?' And they were like, 'Sure, but no.'"
Atwell is expected to reprise her role in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. The specifics of her character's future appearances remain to be seen.
