The season finale of HBO's Lanterns has revealed a fundamental alteration to the Green Lantern mythos, as John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) embraces a new power source that ties directly into the established lore of fear as a potent force within the DC Universe. This development marks a significant departure from the traditional Green Lantern canon.
In the episode "Dirt and Stars," Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen) crafts a new Lantern on Antaan's home planet, which had been afflicted by a weapon that exposed its inhabitants to their deepest fears, leading to widespread suicidal tendencies. This contamination manifested as yellow streaks within the Lantern itself, a visual cue that hints at a darker power.
Sinestro posits that fear, when properly harnessed, can be the universe's most potent force, describing it as "evolutionary intelligence." Despite a warning from the Halogram about the potential dangers of this new Lantern, John Stewart accepts it, reciting a custom oath: "In brightest day, in darkest night, I embrace my fear, I’ll do what’s right. I choose this ring, I choose this fight, in service to this lantern’s light." This oath deviates from the traditional Green Lantern pledge, signaling Stewart's unique path.
The series appears to be drawing heavily from Green Lantern comic lore, specifically the concept of Parallax, the cosmic embodiment of fear that was imprisoned within the Guardians' Central Power Battery on Oa. This "yellow impurity" was responsible for Hal Jordan's descent and the subsequent murder of many Green Lanterns. While Lanterns does not explicitly name Parallax, the writers' deliberate use of fear-based constructs and Sinestro's philosophy strongly suggests its influence. The potential for Parallax to be the primary antagonist in a potential second season is a significant implication.
Furthermore, John's new oath shares thematic similarities with the Sinestro Corps' creed: "In blackest day, in brightest night, beware your fears made into light. Let those who try to stop what's right burn like his power — Sinestro's might!" This connection was confirmed by co-showrunner Tom King, who noted that John is no longer a standard Green Lantern due to his fear-infused Lantern. "He has a Lantern that has a bit of yellow in it. He has a bit of fear in it. It's an unsanctioned Lantern," King explained.
Stewart's journey has positioned him to follow in Sinestro's footsteps, challenging the Guardians' authority and embracing fear over willpower. This path carries the risk of succumbing to fear's influence, a power typically associated with Kyle Rayner, who once hosted Ion, the manifestation of the green energy of willpower. Ion's removal allowed Parallax to possess Kyle, a parallel that may unfold for Stewart.
Sinestro, now stranded on Antaan's planet, is poised to further develop his fear-based Lantern, potentially solidifying his role as the first Yellow Lantern. John Stewart's embrace of this fear-infused power, however, could present an even greater threat to the DC Universe should he fully succumb to the yellow impurity.
