Blizzard Entertainment's popular digital card game, Hearthstone, is set to launch its next expansion, "Reign of the Black Empire," on October 20. This expansion ventures into the distant past, exploring the conflict between the Old Gods and the Titans.
GameSpot has exclusively revealed a package of new Death Knight class cards, all tied to the Blood Rune mechanic, which focuses on control and life-leeching effects. Among these is Grafted Knight, a 2-mana 3/3 minion with Lifesteal. This card is expected to provide a strong early-game presence and aid in survivability against aggressive decks.
Another revealed card is Bloodfiend, a 4-mana 4/4 minion. Its Battlecry allows it to "Spend up to 4 Corpses. Deal 1 damage to all other minions for each." This ability can clear an opponent's mid-game board, provided the player has accumulated enough Corpses, while leaving a minion on the board.
The centerpiece of the reveal is G'huun, a legendary 8-mana minion with base stats of 8/1. G'huun's Battlecry initially steals 6 health from the lowest-health enemies, but this effect is amplified by each Blood Rune played. This means G'huun's statline will increase, and its Battlecry damage will scale significantly, potentially serving as a board clear against smaller enemy groups or even as a finisher.
The health-stealing aspect of G'huun's Battlecry extends to the enemy hero, offering a potential one-turn kill scenario if the opponent's health is sufficiently low. These stolen health points are permanent, preventing the opponent from healing back to recover.
Players can pre-purchase bundles for "Reign of the Black Empire." The standard bundle includes 60 Black Empire packs, two random legendary cards, and an Eonar card back. The mega bundle offers a more comprehensive package with 80 Black Empire packs, 10 golden packs, a signature Drest’agath card, a golden legendary C'Thun, Eye of the Empire card, four Tavern Tickets, and an Eonar Druid hero skin and card back.
In related Hearthstone news, Blizzard recently announced that the Monk, the game's first new class since 2022, is slated for release in 2027. Further updates are planned for the near future, including a new Battlegrounds season featuring a new minion type and a revamped quest system designed to deliver a more continuous narrative experience.
