The latest Helldivers 2 update, titled Devoid of Liberty, has introduced two new Illuminate enemy types: the Crusher and the Wretch. These additions flesh out the Illuminate faction with formidable melee-focused threats that draw clear inspiration from iconic horror games.
The Wretch, described as a new frontline enemy, shares a striking resemblance to the necromorphs from the Dead Space series. These enemies are faster than a sprinting Helldiver unless their limbs are disabled. Unlike the Terminid faction's creatures, the Wretches are noted for their intelligence, capable of quickly flanking to attack from behind. While they can be dispatched by targeting their heads or limbs, they become a significant threat when encountered in groups, with shotguns suggested as an effective counter.

In contrast, the Crusher is a larger, more deliberate foe, akin to Silent Hill's Pyramid Head, though it wields a large club instead of a sword. These brute enemies lack ranged attacks and possess a prominent helmet as their primary armor. The most efficient way to defeat them is by removing this helmet to expose their vulnerable head. While initially appearing less imposing, Crushers are deceptively lethal due to their substantial health pool and the surprisingly far reach of their club attacks. Dealing with them becomes a necessity due to their sheer resilience.

Beyond the new enemies, the Devoid of Liberty update also brings some quality-of-life improvements. These include adjustments to short magazine reloads and backpack reloads, where players no longer need to have the backpack equipped to receive assistance. The campaign terminal on the ship has also returned for players after a break, and the level cap has been raised to 300.
Super Earth's forces are also seeing reinforcements in the form of SEAF troops of varying classes, which may indicate a potential for players to gain direct control over allied units in the future. While this update does not introduce new biomes or major pieces of equipment like the previously added tank, it provides much-needed variety to the Illuminate faction and enhances the overall gameplay experience. The game continues to receive updates and refinements, with new warbonds offering cosmetic armor sets and weapon choices for players willing to invest in the ongoing fight for managed democracy.
